What to Expect

For Mothers-to-Be
Caring for mothers-to-be, their babies and their families is a special part of what we do at Wayne Memorial Hospital. We believe that giving birth is a miraculous event, and we work hard to offer the very best in birthing care. Last year, we helped deliver more than 1,400 babies.

Our childbirth classes are taught by labor and delivery registered nurses who are certified childbirth educators.

We offer spacious delivery suites to promote a family-centered environment. We allow for an extended recovery period in our Labor and Delivery recovery rooms to encourage bonding between mother and child.

We also encourage rooming-in and skin-to-skin contact to help promote unrestricted opportunities for breastfeeding. The Hospital provides lactation services to educate, encourage and support our mothers with breastfeeding. Nursing staff members are trained to assist with lactation management and are available to help our mothers to promote successful breastfeeding.

Noteworthy

Recognition
In 2012, the Hospital received Golden Bow status from the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition for its efforts to encourage breastfeeding.

Special Care for Special Babies
Our special care nursery at Wayne Memorial Hospital provides advanced care for premature and ill infants. Our board-certified pediatricians and obstetricians work together to assure prospective parents that they have come to a place with the experience and resources to manage the most challenging conditions before and after the birth of their baby.

Gynecological Surgery
For a woman undergoing gynecological surgery, life can come to a screeching halt. Wayne Memorial Hospital offers an alternative to traditional gynecological surgery that can significantly reduce the recovery period. da Vinci® robotic surgery provides a minimally invasive option for procedures including hysterectomy, removal of fibroid tumors and repair of pelvic prolapse.

Golden Bow
The North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition awarded Wayne Memorial Hospital with Golden Bow status for our emphasis on breastfeeding for new mothers.

The award is presented to hospitals and birthing centers that have committed to stop distributing bags and other related marketing materials, including formula, from companies that make and sell infant formula.

Mammography
Over the past 15 years, the technical advancements in mammography have greatly improved both technique and results. Today, dedicated equipment, used only for breast x-rays, produces studies that are high in quality with negligible radiation risk. At Wayne Memorial Hospital, we conduct both screening and diagnostic mammograms. Screening mammograms detect breast changes in women who have no sign of breast cancer and can detect a tumor that cannot be felt. Diagnostic mammograms detect unusual breast changes, such as discharge, thickening or a lump in the breast.
