Ultrasound is a non-invasive, diagnostic procedure used to assess soft tissue structures such as muscles, blood vessels, and organs. Ultrasound sends out ultrasonic sound waves at a frequency too high to be heard by the human ear. The sound waves bounce off the organs like an echo, and return to the computer as an electronic picture of the organs or tissue for radiologists to interpret. Like a live TV broadcast, ultrasounds are in real time and used to view organs as they function and assess blood flow through various vessels.
