Using a large, cylindrical (tube-shaped) magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body, MRI may be used instead of CT scanning in situations where organs or soft tissue are being studied, because bones do not obscure the images as they do in CT. Radiation is not used in the MRI procedure. Wayne Memorial Hospital offers “open” MRI units for the comfort of our patients. Open MRI units are particularly preferred for procedures involving:
Children – Parents may stay with the child during the procedure to provide comfort.
Claustrophobic Patients – Open MRI are more spacious, offering relief to patients who are claustrophobic.
Large or Obese Persons – Almost anyone can be accommodated in our open MRI units.
