Medically-Supervised Cardiac Rehab: Helping Cardiac Patients Take Charge of Their Health

When patients have experienced a cardiovascular event – such as heart attack, heart failure or even surgery – cardiac rehab services can help improve recovery, returning patients to the activities they enjoy most.

Available at Wayne UNC Health Care for heart patients with a physician referral, cardiac rehab is a voluntary lifestyle management program, which includes behavioral modification, risk factor
modification, exercise and patient education and support.

Meanwhile Wayne’s expert team of registered nurses, respiratory therapists and a registered dietitian and social worker provide the medical resources patients need to safely complete their program.

According to the American Heart Association, cardiac rehab has been shown to lower patients’ risk for a future cardiac event, by helping patients make long-term improvements to their heart health.

“You tend to get out of it what you put into it,” said Donna Peedin, manager of cardiopulmonary rehab.  “If you’re committed to attendance, you can have positive outcomes and improved functional independence.”

With small class sizes and regular review of each case by the center’s multidisciplinary team, patients can rest assured they are receiving quality care in Wayne County.
