Helping the Uninsured Live Well
Wayne Action Team for Community Health (WATCH) pioneered the concept of
free mobile medical units in North Carolina. The WATCH mobile unit is the only
free mobile primary health clinic in the state, and it travels around Wayne County providing free primary and acute healthcare to our community’s uninsured. Each year WATCH provides medical care to thousands of patients and dispenses more than $2 million in free medications.
Wayne Memorial Hospital is the only local healthcare provider for a large population of uninsured people, and it is through the support of WATCH that we
are able to improve access to care. WATCH also addresses the promotion of healthy behaviors through an obesity treatment and prevention program in collaboration with the Goldsboro Family YMCA and Wayne United Way. WATCH works to prevent substance abuse and teen pregnancy in our community, as well. It’s the stories of cancer caught early, managing diabetes, and kicking the smoking habit that benchmark the success of our WATCH program.
In 2009 the program was expanded with the addition of a stationary satellite office at the local YMCA. Both clinics are staffed by a nurse practitioner and support staff and provide same or next day sick visits and primary care by appointment.
A recent survey of 119 WATCH patients indicates that 97 of them would have sought care at the Hospital’s Emergency Department if it had not been for the WATCH program.
