About Us

As the third largest employer in Wayne County, Wayne Memorial Hospital is considered to be the major hub for healthcare services in the area. Since our founding in 1896, we have grown from a small, grass-roots organization to a full-service hospital and regional referral center for diagnostic tests, specialty and general surgery, intensive care, cancer care, diabetes care and education, emergency care, physical rehabilitation, and many other types of care. A qualified and dedicated staff of professionals, a vast array of in-service and outreach programs, a full spectrum of advanced, state-of-the-art equipment characterize our exceptional facility, which is is licensed for 316 beds. With more than 124 physicians and dentists on the Medical Staff, Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro offers a full spectrum of specialties (see below).

LEADING THE WAY IN TECHNOLOGY
Tomorrow's healthcare technology is at Wayne Memorial Hospital TODAY! Wayne Memorial Hospital was the first North Carolina hospital east of Interstate 95 to offer Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan technology. Unlike most medical tests such as a CT or MRI scans, a PET scan examines the body's chemistry - not just its structure. This allows physicians to treat cancer and heart disease earlier and more accurately. And for most patients, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the chance for successful treatment.

Wayne Memorial Hospital is one of the few hospitals in North Carolina --and among only 10% of hospitals in the country -- implementing a system of checking bar codes on medication dispensed to patients to further enhance safety measures. Almost every medication from the hospital pharmacy has a label with a supermarket-style bar code that can be matched to patients. The drug is compared to a patient's wristband, which also has a bar code. A hand-held scanner/computer compares the drug to the patient's medical records and indicates if there is any reason that the drug should not be administered.

Faced with the rising cost of tracking and replacing expensive mobile equipment like IV pumps, Wayne Memorial Hospital became one of the first hospitals in the US to implement a fully automated asset tracking system.  RadarFind selected Wayne Memorial as their first hospital to use a new type of Real Time Location System (RTLS) and results were seen immediately. Equipment searches have been reduced by more than 50% allowing nurses to spend more time with patients. The system also automatically conveys device status (whether IV pumps are available, in use, or need cleaning) to further streamline sterilization operations and improve patient safety. Wayne Memorial Hospital's success with the RadarFind RTLS has been featured in Healthcare Finance News, RFID Journal, and Healthcare Informatics.

Wayne Memorial Hospital was one of the first hospitals in Eastern North Carolina to install the new LightSpeed CT scanner from GE Medical Systems. The new scanner, a diagnostic machine that can scan a patient in 30 seconds - compared to previous models that took about 3 minutes. The CT exam creates images analogous to a single slice of bread from a whole loaf. The word "slice" is often used to describe a view of patient anatomy. The new CT scanner is referred to as a "16 slice" and replaced the less sophisticated scanner that was referred to as "single slice."
