Eastern Regional Surgery Center

Same-day surgery: some guidelines

Wayne Memorial Hospital has been providing same-day surgery since 1980. While some patients are admitted overnight, most are discharged the day of their surgery. The Eastern Regional Surgery Center is located on the ground floor of the hospital.

  • Arrive early -Typically, patients are asked to arrive early. This allows enough time for the Surgery Center staff, your surgeon, and an anesthesiologist to prepare your operation.
  • Call ahead -It's a good idea to call the afternoon prior to your surgery toconfirm times. On occasion, schedules may change.
  • Wear loose, non-binding clothing -Clothing should be loose so that it will fit comfortably over the area of the body that has been operated on.
  • Don't eat or drink prior to your surgery -Surgery patients cannot eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight prior to their surgery that day. Patients are also asked not to chew gum, as it stimulates saliva. This restriction is enforced because anything in your stomach while under anesthesia could cause life-threatening complications. Patients are also urged not to take medications before arriving at the Surgery Center, unless your physician specifically instructs you otherwise. Bring all medications you are currently taking with you to the Surgery Center in their original containers.
  • Don't wear make-up -Makeup should not be worn on the day of surgery because you will be asked to remove it at the Surgery Center.
  • In addition, patients should bring their glasses with a storage case If you wear contact lenses, you will be asked to remove them prior to surgery, so bring a storage case and your solution. Dentures need to be removed before surgery as well.
